There is no shortage of motivational content on the internet. Something about listening to another person talk about what you can do to better your life would make you actually try to better your life. You sometimes just need somebody to push you to become better. Often the best motivational content comes from people who have lived through struggle and manage to come out of it with wisdom. We often try to emulate people that inspire us. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s hard to replicate the conditions that these motivational speakers went through. Still, their determination is what inspires people to reach for their goals.

When you search for David Goggins on YouTube, you’re more or less going to see a bunch thumbnails featuring him and quotes that’s within the video. It doesn’t seem like David has his own YouTube channel, but a lot of other content creators decided to take audio of his speeches and put it in a video overlaid with text and bunch of random stock footage that they could find. A lot of videos that actually feature David, often video versions of a podcast that he guested on, tend to have a few million views.
David didn’t really have a great childhood. His father would often be drunk and beat him and his brother and mother. Nobody would get out of that situation without having any kind of trauma. But the three managed to flee from the abuse. But his school life didn’t prove to be any better. He suffered a bit due to a learning disability and would often get teased for being his weight and race. David went through a lot. It would understandable if he just let everything slide.
At 19, he applied to join the United States Air Force Pararescue team. Apparently he was accepted to into training even though he failed on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, twice. The pararescue team basically rescue and medically treat other military personnel who drowned. It takes a lot of endurance in order to become part of the team. Unfortunately, David wasn’t great at swimming. But he still pushed himself to get better at it. While the training was going on, he was diagnosed with a sickle cell trait was promptly removed from training.
He didn’t continue the training for the pararescue team but instead finished the one for the Tactical Air Control Party. He spent about five years with the U.S. Air Force. Somehow he kept up with training. He managed to graduate from BUD/S training required to become part of the United States Navy. It’s amazing he spend a chunk of his adult life working for different branches of the military. Soon after, he started training in order to become qualified for one of the SEAL teams. He got assigned to SEAL Team 5. Most of his military career was spent in the Navy. During the fifteen years he was active, he also served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In honor of the friends that died during their mission in Afghanistan, David started to do long-distance running in order to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a charity that helps the children of fallen special operations soldiers. He managed to raise $2 million for the charity. While has still active in the Navy, he also did a lot of marathon running. It’s amazing how once you’ve kind established a habit, it’s very hard to stop. He won a did well for a bunch of the marathons he joined. But it seems that he doesn’t really care that much about those achievements. He cares more about pushing himself to be better than he is today.
In 2018, he released his memoir “Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind And Defy The Odds”. The memoir became a New York Times bestseller. It doesn’t seem like he does anything else aside from doing marathons, selling his book and bunch of other merch. For somebody with a net worth of $3,000,000, he’s probably fine with his life right now. He has also started a challenge called 4x4x48 wherein you have run four miles every four hours for 48 hours. I don’t I can do that.
